The Social Justice Jam: Spaces for Change

The Social Justice Jam Spaces for Change is a short fast-paced cross-institutional online programme over three days which is co-designed by staff and students.

It will take place between the 10th and 12th of June though Microsoft teams and its focus is on creating opportunities for students, staff and the public from different contexts to come together and discuss challenges faced by two communities, Mamelodi in Pretoria and Seacroft in Leeds.

The aim is to bring together different stakeholders to start discussions and co-create ideas for solutions related to community space access, use and management. It also aims to provide the blueprint for an alternative higher education provision that encourages students, staff and the public to take on the role of learners and experts at the same time so they learn from each other recognising that all ways of knowing are valid and should be shared to shed light onto common challenges and broaden the perceptions held regarding cross-cultural collaboration and co-creation.

The University of Pretoria and the University of Leeds are the main academic partners in this collaborative project, but they are supported by ls14trust a local community-based organisation in Seacroft and the Mothong African Heritage site, former dump site-turned-into-a nature reserve and school for African indigenous knowledge systems by the efforts of traditional healer Dr Mabena.

Participants will have the opportunity to hear directly from Dr Mabena and Naomi from ls14trust as well as engage in creative workshops and facilitated group work.
